New Crime Rates Released For NJ Towns: How Did Your Community Do?
You may be surprised to see some of the sleepier, sparsely populated and more rural communities have the worst crime rates in New Jersey.
Yes, Stone Harbor and some of the beach communities of Cape May County have higher crime rates than Newark and Jersey City — by a lot. So says the latest data supplied by the State Police's Uniform Crime Report, which was released this week.
The report, put out annually, identifies the crime rate for each New Jersey town per 1,000 people (see list below). The data in the report is based on crime statistics submitted to the New Jersey Uniform Crime Reporting System by every New Jersey law enforcement agency for the most recent year available, which is 2015.
Overall, violent crime decreased 1 percent from 23,004 to 22,899, but murders increased 4 percent from 354 to 369. Robbery went down 7 percent, from 10,492 to 9,743.

"While the latest crime data shows a decrease in the overall crime rate in New Jersey, there is still considerable room for improvement,” said Attorney General Chris Porrino. “Reducing the number of shootings and murders in our urban areas continues to be a priority for the Attorney General’s Office and the New Jersey State Police. The State Police will continue to support our cities in reducing senseless shootings and murders.”
The annual UCR, prepared by the State Police Uniform Crime Reporting Unit, contains data on the rate of reported crimes, offenses which fall into seven crime categories — the four violent index crimes of murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, and three nonviolent index crimes of burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft. The UCR also contains separate statistical reports on bias crimes, carjacking and domestic violence.

Some of these towns that appeared high on the list are Jersey Shore communities that have a higher-than-average number of petty crimes and disorderly persons offenses during the summertime.
