Jeep Careens Through Emergency U-Turn Striking Guardrail, Tractor-Trailer, Killing NJ Driver, Police Say

The crash resulted in major delays and closures on a North Jersey highway Wednesday morning.

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — A man is dead following a crash on a major Morris County highway, police said.

On Wednesday, around 4:20 a.m., state police were called to I-80 west at milepost 31.7 in Roxbury Township on reports of a crash.

Authorities found that a Jeep SUV, being driven by Shawn Burckure, 52, of Andover, lost directional control and peeled off to the left side of the roadway, traveled through an “emergency U-Turn” area, and struck the end of the guardrail.

After slamming into the guardrail, Burckure continued forward onto I-80 west, when a Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling westbound slammed into the Jeep, according to police.

Burckure sustained fatal injuries from the tractor-trailer crash, authorities said.

The collision resulted in hours of delays and lane closures on I-80 Wednesday morning.

No other injuries were reported, and the crash is still under investigation.
