Investigators concluded that Gregory Meyer bled out due to injuries to his left leg, head, fingers, and hands inflicted by a battery-operated pole saw.

"A large amount of blood was observed in the basement. Blood was also observed leading from the basement, up the basement staircase, and into the bedroom maintained by Meyer within the residence," a probable cause affidavit said.

An investigation pointed to Gregory's son, who was 33 at the time, as being responsible for the killing.

Kyle Meyer, whose relatives say suffered from mental illness, alcoholism, and drug addiction for many years, was found and arrested in Paterson around 9 p.m. that night. Officials said he appeared in good health with no visible injuries on his body when he was apprehended.

He has been in police custody since his arrest, and was found guilty of first-degree murder, among other weapons charges, on Dec. 16, 2025.

ā€œToday’s sentence is the culmination of countless hours of coordinated local/county labor and dedication across multiple law enforcement agencies. I thank them for all their hard work in bringing this defendant to justice for such a heinous and cruel act.ā€
