NJ Sheriff Helps Police Subdue Violent Man At Florida Airport After Disney Trip: Reports

The local sheriff helped to subdue an allegedly drunk man on a violent tirade at a Florida airport last week, per multiple reports.

NEW JERSEY - A New Jersey Sheriff helped Florida police subdue a violent and allegedly drunk man at an Orlando airport last week while coming home from a family Disney trip, according to multiple reports.

Morris County Sheriff Jim Gannon was with his daughter and grandchildren at Orlando International Airport on Feb. 24, per Save Jersey, when a drunk man attacked his wife and a United Airlines employee while waiting for a flight to New York. The man also shouted threats and profanities - as captured on video by a bystander and published by Orlando News 6 (see video below) - and eventually breached the gangway.

Ryan Martin, 34, of Yonkers, was identified as the unruly individual who became physically violent and shouted verbal threats before police tased and arrested him. The man admitted he “had a couple of drinks," according to the Miami Herald.

"Yo, pal, don't even come over here - you're gonna end up dead," Martin can be heard saying in the video.

Officers tried to grab Martin, but he resisted, Orlando News 6 reports. The New Jersey Sheriff said he aided officers as Martin was tased and handcuffed.

"He was very aggressive towards that uniformed officer, who did a phenomenal job. And so, there was a taser deployment and then we went to the ground and I assisted in handcuffing the individual," Gannon told NBC New York.

The man is barred from flying United Airlines pending an investigation. The Miami Herald reports that he was lodged in Orange County Jail Thursday before he was bailed the next day.

Martin faces charges including disorderly intoxication, child abuse, domestic violence, battery and resisting an officer with violence, per the Herald. No serious injuries were reported as a result of the incident, a United spokesperson told the outlet.

Gannon is currently running for his third term in Morris County. He’s a former Boonton police officer and FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force member with over 38 years of experience, per his campaign website.

“With all the unfair media coverage of law enforcement, Jim is proof that a police officer is never off duty,” Chris Russell, Gannon’s campaign consultant, told Save Jersey. “On vacation to Disney with his grandkids, Jim could have stayed in his seat, but instead he jumped in to subdue a violent individual and help local officers. I’m proud to work for him and New Jersey should be proud he’s one of our own.”
