Race To Replace Sherrill: Details On Congressional Primary Election In Morris Co.

See what Morris County voters need to know about the upcoming special election.

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — Just months after a consequential gubernatorial election, some New Jersey residents, particularly those in Morris County, are being faced with another choice.

On Thursday, a primary election is being held to fill the congressional seat left vacant by now-Governor Mikie Sherrill.

The special election will decide which candidates will face off for a chance to run the 11th Congressional District in a general election in April.

The 11th district consists of the following towns:

  • Morris County – Boonton, Boonton Township, Butler, Chatham, Chatham Township, Denville, Dover, East Hanover, Florham Park, Hanover, Harding, Jefferson, Kinnelon, Lincoln Park, Madison, Mendham Twp (part), Montville, Morris Plains, Morris Township, Morristown Town, Mountain Lakes, Parsippany-Troy Hills, Pequannock, Randolph, Riverdale, Rockaway, Rockaway Township, Victory Gardens
  • Passaic County – Little Falls, Totowa, Wayne (part), Woodland Park
  • Essex County – Belleville, Bloomfield, Cedar Grove, Fairfield, Glen Ridge, Livingston, Maplewood, Millburn, Montclair (part), North Caldwell, Nutley, Roseland, South Orange, West Caldwell

The winners of the primary will match up against any independent or third-party candidates in a general election on Thursday, April 16. There will be nine days of in-person early voting (April 6 to April 14). The voter registration deadline is March 26.

Where Do I Vote?

To check where to vote on Thursday, visit the Morris County Government's website here, and find your town on the list.

If you're unsure which ward/district you live in, use the state's Polling Place Search system here.

Polls will be open Thursday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Candidates

Only one Republican candidate is vying for the 11th District seat: Randolph Mayor Joe Hathaway.

Democrats appearing on the ballot include (in alphabetical order by last name):

Two of the candidates appearing on the Democratic ballot have withdrawn from the race: former Sherrill congressional staffer Marc Chaaban and Maplewood Town Committee member Dean Dafis.

Early Voting

Early in-person voting for the special primary election has been underway since Wednesday. Tuesday is the final day to vote in person at one of these

  • Boonton Township Municipal Building, 155 Powerville Rd, Boonton
  • Morris County Central Park, 1 Gov Chris Christie Dr, (Greystone Park)
  • Denville Municipal Building, 1 St Marys Pl, Denville
  • Hanover Community Center, 15 N Jefferson Rd, Whippany
  • Madison Hartley Dodge Memorial, 50 Kings Rd, Madison
  • Morristown Municipal Building, 200 South St, Morristown

As of Sunday, more than 3,300 Morris County residents have voted early for this special election.
