RIKER DANZIG MOURNS DEATH OF MARIE GARIBALDI

Morristown, NJ (January 15, 2016) – Morristown-based law firm Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland & Perretti LLP is greatly saddened by the death of its former partner Marie L. Garibaldi, who passed away today. When she was elected a partner at Riker Danzig in 1973, she became the first woman to become a partner at a major New Jersey law firm. She continued to blaze trails for women in the law when, while at Riker Danzig, she helped to found the Women’s Rights Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association and then became the first female president of the Bar Association. Most significantly, she was tapped by New Jersey Governor Thomas Kean in 1982 to serve as a Justice on the New Jersey Supreme Court, making her the first woman to serve on the Court.

Her Riker Danzig partners were proud but not surprised by her ascension to the state’s highest court. Garibaldi was a leader in the Firm’s Tax Group, and had long earned the respect and admiration of not only her partners and colleagues at Riker Danzig, but the high regard of the New Jersey legal community.

Justice Garibaldi will be remembered as a role model for women in the practice of law, as well as for her contributions to New Jersey law, her outstanding legal mind, and her unfailing friendliness and interest in others. She will be greatly missed.
