Smoke at Headquarters Plaza Leads to Evacuation, Police Say

No injuries reported, incident believe to have been started by electrical malfunction, police report.

Police and fire departments responded to Headquarters Plaza on Speedwell Avenue Thursday morning when emergency calls of visible smoke and flames came from the building, Morristown police said.

Personnel at Headquarters told first responders flames and smoke could be seen on the 14th floor and penthouse levels, Lt. Stuart Greer said. Prior to police arriving, the floors had been evacuated, Greer said.

Morristown fire units conducted an investigation and found no active fire at the location, but did report a smoke condition that appeared to be caused by a malfunctioning electrical box on the 14th floor, Greer said.

Power was shut off to the impacted areas during the investigation and the area was determined to be safe shortly after. The building’s maintenance department will conduct further work to determine the exact cause of the malfunction, Greer said.

There were no injuries or property damage as a result of the incident, and Speedwell Avenue was temporarily closed between Spring Street and the Morristown Green for a short time during the investigation.
