The group of children - about 70 school-aged children and their chaperones from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Newark, Red Bank, and Asbury Park - participated in NJ Sea Grant’s Marsh and Ocean Environments program. This full-day, outdoor program provides an introduction to the salt marsh and barrier beach environment. The kids enjoyed hands-on learning activities at both sites. An overview of the history of Sandy Hook is integrated throughout the program.
Cynthia Banks, Vice President of Operations at the Boys and Girls Club of Newark said about the event, “The children had a WONDERFUL TIME! The BIG HIT was them putting on the [hip waders] and going out into the salt marsh. All of them got to wear outfit and go out into the inlet to collect sea samples. It was great listening to them share their experience with their parents as they were picking them up at the end of day.”
