Voter Turnout Halved In Morristown Compared To 2020 Election

MORRISTOWN, NJ — Voter turnout tends to significantly decline in the cycle after a presidential election. But the rest of Morris County outpaced Morristown in terms of participation in the recent General Election.

Only 37.82 percent of Morristown voters turned in ballots — compared to 47.2 percent of Morris County. Morristown's participation nearly halved from the previous year, when 70.49 percent of those registered voted in the 2020 General Election. County-wide, 78.45 percent of registered voters participated last year.

Morristown had uncontested elections for mayor and representation on the Morris School District's Board of Education, which may have turned down the electoral heat locally. But Morristown still had a contested election for Town Council, State House races and a gubernatorial contest that ended up closer than most polls expected.

New Jersey also may have seen a greater increase in voter enthusiasm from Republicans, rather than blue areas such as Morristown. The GOP won eight of the 10 counties that had the biggest vote gains compared to 2017, helping the party flip three counties that Gov. Phil Murphy won four years ago.

In 2017, only 41.9 percent of Morris County voters participated. That year, 38.2 percent of Morristown voters participated in the General Election.
