Water Main Replacement May Affect Water Service In Morristown

MORRISTOWN, NJ — Water service may be disrupted in select areas around Morristown on Monday, June 6 due to the planned construction of the water main in Greater Morristown.

The Southeast Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority (SMCMUA) began a $3.2 million project earlier this year to replace 1.53 miles of water main in Greater Morristown, according to Morris County officials.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, the areas between George Street, Rowe Street and Lincoln Street may experience a decrease in water service and discolored water. According to officials, neither of these will have an impact on the quality of your water.

If discolored water remains after repairs, SMCMUA recommends flushing the internal cold water plumbing lines until all faucets run clear, beginning at the lowest level of your home or business and working your way up to the highest level floor.

The project may also cause traffic disruptions near the affected areas, as SMCMUA will need to partially close roads as needed to replace water mains. Morristown's residents will be notified of any road closures.

Workers in Morristown are replacing some of the city's oldest unlined, cast-iron main lines, which were installed in the 1890s. The new main will connect Washington Street to Conklin Avenue and South Street to James Street.

The utility company also plans on replacing 30 fire hydrants and installing 40 new water meters and meter pits throughout Morristown.
