West Morris High School Cheerleaders Give Back

Student volunteers spent time with clients at VNANNJ's Friendship House Summer Picnic

West Morris High School Cheerleaders Give Back

On Thursday, August 3, 2017, five student volunteers, including Jenna Salamone, Program Coordinator for Juniors Helping Seniors, spent their summer evening volunteering at a picnic at Friendship House, Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey’s (VNA) social adult day care center in Boonton. The annual summer event brings together Friendship House clients and their families for an evening of food, games, entertainment and fellowship.

Salamone and her team of volunteers served food, lead games and even preformed a cheer they created specifically for Friendship House.

“We had a wonderful time volunteering at the picnic and it was a privilege to serve the Friendship House clients and their families,” said Salamone. “Giving back to the community is something that’s very important to me – serving others and brightening their day is incredibly rewarding.”

Salamone, who’s a senior at West Morris High School, created Juniors Helping Seniors in partnership with Visiting Nurse Association of Northern NJ in 2015. Through her own volunteer experience with VNA’s House Calls for Groceries program, Jenna realized there were other homebound residents in her community who could benefit from a friendly visitor. Juniors Helping Seniors was created to provide senior citizens with a break from the social isolation that often comes from living alone or being homebound and to provide students with a rewarding volunteer opportunity.
