West Nile Virus Found Again In Morris Twp

This is the second time this season the virus has been found in Morris Twp.

MORRIS TWP, NJ — Mosquitos infected with West Nile Virus have been found in Morris Township for the second time this summer, officials said.

The mosquitoes were found in a wooded area near Vom Eigen Drive. More sampling will be done, and officials warn limited spraying could also take place.

This is the second time officials have warned against the virus this summer. Infected mosquitos were found in August, in the woods behind the old Mennen/Colgate site and near Tucker Field on Cedar Street.

West Nile virus can be mild, with symptoms of fever, headaches, tiredness and swollen lymph glands. Even mild infections can last for weeks, but about 1 in 150 people will develop a severe illness that can cause neurological damage, including paralysis, and death.

Here are some things you can do to reduce your risk of contracting West Nile virus:

  • Don't produce mosquitoes on your property. Dump or drain standing water. Mosquitoes can't begin their life without water.
  • Defend yourself against mosquitoes using repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
  • Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are present, typically Dawn and Dusk.
