Who said you can't get pampered at summer camp?

Summer campers living with epilepsy and other intellectual and developmental disabilities are treated to an afternoon of pampering.

On Thursday, August 4th, 2016, students of The Artistic Academy of Hair Design’s Cosmetology and Aesthetics programs visited Camp Nova in Sandyston, NJ, to provide services to over 25 campers living with epilepsy and other intellectual and developmental disabilities during an afternoon dedicated to beauty.

“One of the highlights to the camp week for our campers is our dance,” explained Veronica Trathen, Administrative Director of Camp Nova. “Artistic Academy comes each year prior to the dance to help the campers get ready for their big night. Having the pampering experience helps to set the tone of the evening festivities and has now become a tradition they would otherwise miss. We couldn’t be more grateful for the community support.”

Campers were treated to makeup applications, hair styling and manicures, all provided by senior level students working under a student permit.

This year marked the ninth year that Artistic Academy has visited Camp Nova, and each year more students find the inspiration to volunteer their time for the campers. “The power of the cosmetology license allows us to make people feel good about themselves,” Darlene Fox, Director of the Artistic Academy of Hair Design, stated. “The students embrace the opportunity to use their permits to give back. It’s all about paying it forward.”

Camp Nova provides children and young adults the opportunity to enjoy an independent summer camp experience in an environment filled with fun memories to last a lifetime.
