2 Days Of Gun Violence In Newark: 8 People Shot, 2 Dead

Gun violence claimed a victim's life in Newark, just a day after a separate shooting killed one person and injured several others.

NEWARK, NJ — Gun violence claimed a victim’s life in Newark on Tuesday night, just a day after a separate shooting killed one person and injured several others, authorities said.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, three victims were shot at 80 Clinton Place around 8:40 p.m. on Nov. 19. Police said one victim died and another is in critical condition.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office identified the deceased victim as Sabor A. Townes, 22, of South Orange.

A separate multiple shooting also took place on Monday at 6:39 p.m. on the 100-block of South 8th Street. Authorities said there were five victims. One person died, and four others suffered non-critical wounds.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office identified the deceased victim as Hassan Webb, 49, of Newark.

No arrests have been reported for either shooting as of Wednesday. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force tips line at 1-877 TIPS- 4EC or 1-877-847-7432.

A preliminary investigation indicates there is no connection between the two shootings, prosecutors said.

After a similar spate of gun violence last summer, Newark police decried the losses to the victim's families, but urged residents to keep the shootings in a "wider perspective."

Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said that as of August, homicides were down 26 percent from 2018, and shooting incidents were down by 13 percent.
