2 Dead, 1 Hurt After Car Crash On Rt. 1&9 In Newark: Authorities

Two people are dead and another is in critical condition after a car crash on U.S. Route 1 & 9 in Newark, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A car crash on U.S. Route 1 & 9 in Newark on Sunday killed two people and injured another, authorities said.

The two-car crash took place around 2:38 a.m., near mile marker 49.6 on the northbound section of the busy roadway, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

A passenger in one vehicle died at the scene, and the driver was taken to University Hospital and is in critical condition, authorities said.

The driver of the second car died at the scene, prosecutors said.

The Newark Fire Department also responded to the scene, and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office crime scene investigations bureau was called in to lead the investigation, which is ongoing.
