2 Dogs Left To Suffer On Hot, Tarry N.J. Rooftop

NEWARK, NJ — Authorities are searching for the people who left two dogs on a broiling, tarry, feces-covered Newark rooftop on one of the hottest days so far this summer.
Animal control officers from the Associated Humane Society of Newark reported that they arrived to find the canines – a Yorkshire and a pit bull – suffering in the 96-degree heat on the rooftop.
“When our officers arrived, they found [the dogs] frantically ‘dancing’ on the roof in an attempt to stop their feet from burning,” the animal shelter’s staff reported via social media. “The yorkie continuously ran to the edge of the roof to try to find an area that would not burn her further while the pit bull, covered in hot tar, had nearly given up hope.”

No one was at home at the residence at the time, and while there were trays of chicken legs and rice on the roof, there “wasn’t a drop of water in sight,” shelter staff wrote.
Animal control officers removed the “overheated and distraught” pair and brought them to an emergency veterinary hospital where they were treated for burns, shelter staff said.

“Please speak up when you see an animal suffering,” staff added. “These two dogs are alive today because someone saw them and decided to make a call instead of ignoring the situation and figuring someone else will deal with it. Animals cannot speak for themselves. Please get involved. Call your local police if you see something like this and please, do not ignore it.”
