2 Men Accused Of Stabbing, Carjacking On Same Day In Newark
Two people were stabbed during separate carjackings in Newark. Earlier that day, a victim was robbed after leaving a restaurant, police say.
NEWARK, NJ — Newark police made two arrests in connection with a stabbing and two carjackings that recently took place in the city, authorities announced Saturday.
According to the Newark Department of Public Safety:
“At approximately 2:55 a.m. [on July 8], police responded to the 200-block of New York Avenue on a call of an assault. A man was chased and assaulted after leaving an Elm Street restaurant by three males following a dispute inside the establishment. During the altercation, the victim was stabbed and one of the suspects stole the victim’s cell phone. The victim is reportedly in stable condition.”
Detectives investigating this incident identified Marvin Omar Benitez-Argueta, 24, of Newark, and Miguel Granados-Cabrera, 21, of Linden, as suspects, authorities said.

Police found both men at Miller Street and Avenue B on July 13, authorities said.
Benitez-Argueta and Granados-Cabrera were each charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, conspiracy and robbery in connection with the July 8 incident.

CARJACKINGS
Newark police also obtained an arrest warrant for both men in connection with a carjacking that happened later that same day, authorities said.
According to the Newark Department of Public Safety:
“At approximately 3:20 a.m., a man inside his parked car on the 300-block of Oliver Street was approached by Benitez-Argueta, Granados-Cabrera and another suspect. They pulled the victim out of his vehicle and stabbed him with a knife before taking his vehicle, containing his wallet and car keys. The victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment. Each suspect faces a charge of carjacking in this incident.”
Authorities said Granados-Cabrera is also accused of taking part in another carjacking that morning:
“The second carjacking occurred at 5 a.m. on the 200-block of Ferry Street, where a man exiting his vehicle was approached by Granados-Cabrera and another suspect. The two suspects demanded the victim’s vehicle, stabbed him with a knife and choked him before taking his vehicle and wallet, containing $120 in cash, bank cards, and other personal property. The victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Granados-Cabrera is charged with carjacking in connection with this incident.”
