2 Men Carjack Rideshare Driver In Newark; Police Search For Suspects

Newark police are searching for two men who allegedly carjacked a rideshare driver, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark police are searching for two men who allegedly carjacked a rideshare driver on Sunday, authorities said.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the incident began around 10:20 p.m. when a rideshare driver picked up two men at Eckert Avenue near Osborne Terrace.

“The driver and suspects engaged in a verbal altercation and each exited the vehicle on the 600-block of Bergen Street, where the two suspects assaulted the victim. One suspect entered the victim’s vehicle and fled, heading north on Bergen Street. The second suspect walked away, heading east on Clinton Avenue. Inside the vehicle was the victim’s cell phone, two debit cards, an AirPod with a case and other personal property.”

Newark police said the first suspect is a male about 5 feet 10 inches with braided hair, who was wearing a red jacket and blue jeans. The second suspect is about 5 feet 8 inches with braided hair, who was wearing a yellow traffic vest, blue jeans and a dark hat.

The carjacked vehicle was a maroon 2020 Toyota Highlander bearing New Jersey plate #Z99MWW.
