2 Newark Fatal Shootings: 3 Arrested, Charged With Murder

NEWARK, NJ — Police arrested three people – two from East Orange and one from Hillside – in connection with separate fatal shootings in Newark that took place in September, authorities recently announced.

Investigations into both shootings continue, according to a Friday statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Department of Public Safety. Anyone with information can contact the prosecutor's office tips line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.

ROSEVILLE AVENUE

Prosecutors said two East Orange men have been charged with the recent murder of Khalif Ligon, 29, of Newark.

According to prosecutors:

“Jamaal Mahorn, 37, and Buddy Randolph, 40, both of East Orange, are charged with murdering Ligon on Sept. 7. On that date, at 1:49 a.m., police were notified of an alleged shooting on the 100-block of Roseville Avenue in Newark. Upon arrival, they found Ligon suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to University Hospital and pronounced dead at 2:17 a.m.”

Mahorn and Randolph have been charged with murder. Mahorn is also charged with conspiracy and three weapons offenses, while Randolph is charged with conspiracy to commit murder, resisting arrest, and three weapons offenses, prosecutors said.

MILLER STREET

Prosecutors said Kyree Jones, 20, of Hillside, has been arrested and charged with the murder of Kareem Kason Jeffers, 32, of Newark.

According to prosecutors:

“On Sept. 22 at 11:06 p.m., police responded to the 100-block of Miller Street, Newark, on a report of a shooting. Responding officers found Jeffers suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to University Hospital in Newark and pronounced dead at 11:37 p.m.”

Jones has been charged with murder, robbery, conspiracy, and two weapons offenses, prosecutors said.
