2 Water Main Breaks Hamper Newark Traffic, Close Local Roads

NEWARK, NJ — A pair of water main breaks in Newark hampered the Wednesday morning commute and shut down local roadways, authorities said.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the first break took place shortly before 3:40 a.m. Police responded to 1st Street near Dickerson Street, closing down the northbound lanes of 1st Street, from Dickerson Street to Sussex Avenue soon afterwards.

The second break took place about an hour later at Davenport Avenue and North 9th Street. The break also closed the surrounding area to traffic, authorities said.

The Newark Water Department responded to both incidents. Drivers should anticipate delays and seek alternate routes, city officials said.
