NEWARK, NJ — Who will win the three available seats on the Newark Board of Education? Will the school district’s budget pass? These are the two questions that local voters answered Tuesday when they headed to the polls for the 2023 school election.

BUDGET

With 161 of 172 districts reported, voters are leaning heavily towards approving the Newark Public School District's 2023-2024 budget.

Here are the unofficial results, according to the Essex County Clerk’s Office:

  • YES – 2,739 votes (86.65%)
  • NO – 422 votes (13.35%)

BOARD OF EDUCATION (3 Available Seats)

With 161 of 172 districts reported, Hasani Council, Josephine Garcia and Allison James-Frison have wide leads in the board of education race.

Here are the unofficial results, according to the Essex County Clerk’s Office:

  • Josephine Garcia – 3,074 votes (23.24%)
  • Hasani Council – 3,149 votes (23.8%)
  • Allison James-Frison – 2,923 votes (22.09%)
  • James Wright Jr. – 1,139 votes (8.61%)
  • Thomas Luna – 1,096 votes (8.28%)
  • Tawana Johnson-Emory – 890 votes (6.73%)
  • Latoya Jackson – 574 votes (4.34%)
  • Ade’Kamil Kelly – 385 votes (2.91%)
