3 Halloween Events In Newark: Parades, Pumpkin Decorating Contest

NEWARK, NJ — Three Halloween-themed events will be taking place this fall in Newark’s East Ward: a pumpkin decorating contest and two parades – one for families and another for pets.

Here’s what to know about each event, according to a news release from East Ward Councilman Michael Silva’s office:

Pumpkin Decorating Contest — October 24

The celebrations begin with Councilman Silva’s Pumpkin Decorating Contest on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at East Side High School (Pulaski Street entrance).

Children will compete in four age groups — 3–5, 6–8, 9–11 and 12–14 years old — with a $100 gift card awarded to the winner of each age group. All necessary decorating materials will be provided, so participants only need to bring their imagination and creativity.

The event is open to Newark residents, with East Ward families especially encouraged to participate. Registration is requested by Oct. 22 by calling 973-733-3665 or 973-901-9098.

Families are invited to wear their favorite costumes and join a fully escorted parade beginning at Five Corners and ending at Peter Francisco Park.

At the conclusion of the parade, families can enjoy an afternoon of community celebration featuring bouncy castles, face painting, food, music, games and additional activities.

2nd Annual Halloween Pet Parade — October 31

The festivities conclude on Saturday, Oct. 31 with the 2nd annual Halloween Pet Parade at Independence Park (Sheriff Armando and Mary Fontoura Community Center).

Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by the pet parade around the outside of the park at 10 a.m. Residents are encouraged to dress up their pets and join the fun. Refreshments will also be served. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes: $200 for first place, $150 for second place and $100 for third place.
