3 Newark Firefighters Hurt Battling Blaze; 3 Families Relocated

Newark firefighters arrived to find flames and smoke coming from a four-story building on South Orange Avenue, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark public safety officials said three local firefighters were injured while extinguishing a fire at 358 South Orange Avenue on Tuesday.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the blaze took place shortly before 3:30 p.m. at a four-story, mixed-use building. When firefighters arrived, they saw flames and smoke coming from the second, third and fourth floors.

The fire also spread to an adjacent building at 360 South Orange Avenue, authorities said.

Officials said that a fire captain and a firefighter were evaluated at the scene for elevated heart rates and blood pressure issues. Another firefighter was evaluated for an injury to his elbow. Each was transported to University Hospital for treatment.

No other injuries were reported, authorities said.

Three families, including five adults and six children, were relocated due to the fire.

Fire officials declared the scene under control at 4:18 p.m. The Newark Arson Unit is investigating the cause and origin of the blaze.
