4 Injured As Gas Line Explodes, Destroys Home In Newark, Reports Say

The explosion forced dozens of evacuations and more than 20 people into temporary shelter, the Red Cross of New Jersey said.

NEWARK, NJ — Four people were injured Saturday when a natural gas line exploded and damaged a home in the Ironbound section, according to reports.

The explosion happened about 12:20 p.m. on Magazine Street, News 12 New Jersey reported.

The explosion happened after construction workers tapped a gas line after being incorrectly told it was shut off, NJ.com reported, quoting a Newark official. The workers resealed the line but pressure built up and caused the line to explode, the report said.

The four people injured included at least one teenager, NJ.com reported.

The blast blew out the front of the house and prompted evacuations of nearby homes while crews from PSE&G repaired the line, the report said.

Among the evacuations were 15 dogs from a home behind the one where the explosion happened, the reports said.

The Red Cross said it was providing 22 people in 13 families with temporary housing, food and other items, the organization said.
