NEW JERSEY — ShopRite supermarkets in Newark, East Orange, Kearny and Hillside are boosting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) dollars spent on dairy products for an entire year for low-income shoppers, with more stores expected to follow later this summer.

On Tuesday, ShopRite announced that it is launching the “Add Milk!” campaign at four stores: ShopRite of Newark at 206 Springfield Avenue, ShopRite of East Orange at 533 Martin Luther King Boulevard, ShopRite of Kearny at 100 Passaic Avenue, and ShopRite of Hillside at 370 Route 22.

The program, which will run for a full year, boosts the purchasing power of NJ SNAP dollars spent on milk and other dairy products, helping shoppers purchase more nutritious food with the same resources.

Add Milk! is a pilot program of Baylor University’s Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty, and is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Here’s how it works, according to ShopRite:

“When SNAP customers purchase skim milk or one percent milk with their EBT card, a dollar paper coupon is generated for every whole dollar spent. The coupon can be used on their next dairy purchase, and any dairy product can be redeemed that lists fluid cow’s milk or cream as a first ingredient – yogurt, cheese and more.”

Other ShopRites are expected to implement the program later this summer, including stores in Elizabeth, Bayonne, Jersey City and the Columbia Park store in North Bergen.

“ShopRite is proud to take part in a program that helps families get the food they want and need for their families,” said Neil Greenstein, owner and operator of the ShopRite of Newark.

“We know that milk and dairy provide important and essential nutrients for children, and we believe the Add Milk! incentive will make it easier for families – especially those struggling with food insecurity – to access those important foods,” Greenstein said.
