9 Newark Students Earn Full College Scholarships: Football, Track
Scholarship winners include students from Malcolm X. Shabazz, Barringer and West Side high schools.
NEWARK, NJ — A group of nine student-athletes in the Newark Public School District received full college scholarships last week for National Signing Day, administrators said.
According to a statement from school officials, eight football players from Malcolm X. Shabazz, Barringer and West Side high schools committed to continue their careers in college. In addition, a student from Barringer High School signed to run track and field.

- MALCOLM X. SHABAZZ – Byron Whitehead and Khaleem Lawson signed to attend Highlands University in New Mexico; Marquis Concepcion will attend American International College in Massachusetts, and Michael Bright, Jr. will attend Long Island University/Post
- WEST SIDE – Darius Gooden will be attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick and Prince Okituama will attend Kent State University in Ohio
- BARRINGER - Zamar Wise will attend Rutgers University in New Brunswick and Angel Carrion will attend Washburn University in Kansas. Fiyin Amori, will attend Monmouth University with a full track and field scholarship.
“These students are on track to complete their studies, graduate, and participate in college sports with a full scholarship,” Superintendent Roger León said. “I have every confidence that each of these young men will excel in school and in sports and make Newark very proud of them.”
