Each year, the College for Education and Engaged Learning at MSU hosts the event for supporters who boost the university’s students and educational programs, or the nearby communities.

Houssam, who graduated from Montclair State University in 2019 with a master of arts in teaching, fits the bill perfectly.

The Partnership for West Side High School, which sponsored this year’s celebratory dinner, gave a big round of applause for Houssam’s recent nomination from the state.

“Naming El Houcin Houssam as Essex County Teacher of the Year is a huge accomplishment for the West Side community, and the partnership can't think of a better way to recognize the impact he is making in Newark than honoring him where it all started: Montclair State University,” executive director Rasheen Peppers said.

“We are grateful that Mr. Houssam’s work, service, dedication, and results for West Side High School students have been recognized, and we hope his example showcases the school's unique value to Newark’s families,” Peppers added.

Houssam said the accolades have been a “tremendous honor.”

“I’m so proud to represent my colleagues at West Side High School and be a part of this very special public education community,” Houssam said. “What we are doing together at West Side has been incredible and this special day would not be possible if I was not part of such a great team.”

Houssam also credited the “leadership and vision” of West Side’s school principal, Akbar Cook, who has earned some serious praise of his own over the past years.
