America's Best Diner Is Right Here In New Jersey

This place may just be worth the trip if you live - or you're just passing through - New Jersey.

A national magazine has rated the best diners in the country, and topping the list is a New Jersey establishment.

Tops Diner in East Newark is tops in the U.S.A., says Time Out.

The national publication that covers news and entertainment released its list his past week, describing Tops as "a statewide legend, its shinily retro steel exterior calling in eaters like a beacon seven days a week."

Tops was at the top of the New Jersey diner list published by Patch, via the entertainment app Foursquare, earlier this year.

Tops also was one of 10 finalists in nj.com's 2016 search for N.J.'s best diner.

The diner started as Tops Grill in the 1920s. George Golemis bought a later version of the diner in 1972, and his sons, Jimmy, John and Van, run it now, according to nj.com.

"Serving tri-staters since 1972, Tops boasts an enormously talented kitchen staff—the food here is fresh, hot and on-point," according to Time Out. "Hits from the massive menu include a selection of excellent eggs Benedict, an indulgent meatloaf dowsed in mushroom gravy and an aptly named Fatty Melt: a hamburger snuggled between two grilled cheese sandwich 'buns' and crowned with pickles and bacon."

Perhaps it makes sense that a New Jersey place would top the list, because there's nothing quite like the big, half-pound burgers, as well as the thick, crusty fries and the creamy soups you get at a Jersey diner. Let's not forget breakfast, too.

Tops Diner appears to have that - and more.
