Tenant Organizer In Newark Alleges Retaliation Amid Dispute With Management: Report

A resident of an apartment building in Newark is facing eviction, a report says.

| Updated

NEWARK, NJ — The leader of a tenant union at a Newark apartment building is alleging that management retaliated against him after he threatened them with legal action, a report says.

Multiple tenants at 1180 Raymond Boulevard – also known as Eleven80 – have been sharing their complaints with Jersey Digs, including a knife-point attack on a security guard outside the building last year. Other alleged security issues include non-functioning security cameras and front doors that are left unlocked all day. Tenants have also reportedly had difficulty getting someone on the phone when things go wrong in the building.

One resident said he is paying $3,600 a month to live in his upper-floor apartment. That resident – Andy Dwyer – says he is now facing eviction, Jersey Digs reported Wednesday.

Dwyer, an attorney representing himself and the tenants in Superior Court, alleged that management is using the purported reason for the eviction – the condition of his apartment unit – as a “fabricated excuse” for evicting him.

“If they see that the person who’s an actual lawyer runs the risk of getting an eviction brought against them, none of these other tenants who are not lawyers will ever have the guts to stand up to the management of this building ever, ever again,” Dwyer said.
