NEWARK, NJ — The Newark Public Library will host a special community celebration honoring Stephen Crane, the influential novelist, poet, journalist and Newark native whose innovative work has inspired readers for generations.
The library’s tribute to Crane will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28 at the main branch, 5 Washington Street. The event is free and open to the public.
Here’s what to expect, event organizers said:
“The library will unveil a beautifully crafted commemorative plaque at its historic main branch, paying tribute to Crane’s remarkable literary legacy and his enduring connection to the city where his story began. The ceremony will bring together community members, local leaders, educators, and literature enthusiasts to reflect on Crane’s legacy and celebrate Newark’s rich cultural heritage. Brief remarks and the plaque unveiling will highlight Crane’s lasting impact on American storytelling.”
According to a news release from the library, Crane – born in Newark in 1871 – left an indelible mark on American literature through his vivid storytelling, emotional depth and groundbreaking style. From “The Red Badge of Courage” to his haunting poetry, his work continues to resonate with readers of all ages.
