Here’s why she earned the award, according to a news release:

“A passionate advocate for youth empowerment and community uplift, Rashanna has consistently demonstrated a commitment to creating opportunities for others. As a young leader emerging from Newark, she has been actively engaged in initiatives that promote educational advancement, civic awareness and social responsibility among her peers. Her work reflects a deep understanding of the importance of using one’s voice to inspire change and build stronger, more equitable communities.”

The award, established in 2021 by the National Association of Secretaries of State, pays tribute to the enduring legacy of civil rights icon John Lewis. It recognizes people under the age of 25 who are actively advancing voting rights, equity and meaningful change within their communities.

Frison was presented with the award by former New Jersey Secretary of State and Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way.

“Receiving the John Lewis Youth Leadership Award is not just an honor—it is a responsibility,” Frison said. “I am committed to continuing the work of uplifting my community, advocating for justice, and empowering the next generation to lead with courage and purpose.”
