📰 News we're reading

• Baton Strikes, Pepper Spray, Lunging Kicks And Multiple Arrests: NJ ICE Prison Under Siege (patch.com) — Newark’s Delaney Hall immigration detention center has become the scene of escalating clashes between protesters and federal agents after detainees launched a hunger strike over alleged inhumane conditions. Multiple demonstrators have been arrested, officials like Sen. Andy Kim and Sen. Cory Booker have visited or intervened, and videos from outside the Newark facility show pepper spray, batons, barricades, and tense standoffs over detainee transfers.

• Newark Police Search for Suspect Accused of Stealing E-Bike From Norwood Street Home (shorenewsnetwork.com) — Newark police are asking residents for tips after an electric bicycle was stolen from a Norwood Street home in the West Ward on May 18. Surveillance images show a suspect arriving in a gold Chevrolet Equinox before taking the black-and-red Ride Star e-bike and fleeing southbound. Anyone with information can share anonymous tips through the Newark Crime Stoppers line or police website.

• DHS threatens to stop international flight processing at airports in ‘sanctuary' cities (wkrn.com) — Newark residents should know federal officials are threatening to pull customs agents from Newark Liberty International Airport in response to protests at a local immigrant detention center, a move that could cancel international flights entirely. City leaders and airline groups are pushing back, warning of major disruption just weeks before World Cup visitors begin arriving in the U.S.
