Housing Project For Veterans Breaks Ground In Newark

NEWARK, NJ — A plan is in the works to build a housing project in Newark for military veterans and their families who are facing homelessness.

Domus Corporation, the housing development agency for the Archdiocese of Newark, recently announced that it is working in collaboration with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark to develop 25-units of affordable, permanent housing in New Jersey's largest city.

A groundbreaking event was held in May for the project at 102 Third Avenue.

According to a news release, eligible households will be earning less than 30 percent of the area median income. All of the building’s units, including 18 one-bedroom and seven two-bedroom units, will be ADA-compliant.

The $12.3 million project is being funded through a number of sources, including the New Jersey DCA National Housing Trust Fund, City of Newark Making Housing Homes, the City of Newark Affordable Newark Program, the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York, and a congressionally directed spending/HUD allocation through Sen. Cory Booker’s office, as well as construction financing through Provident Bank.

The Newark Housing Authority has committed project-based Section 8 housing vouchers to all 25 of the residence’s units, the Domus Corporation said.

“Through these various funding sources, the project will maintain a commitment to be affordable for a minimum of 30 years and is anticipated to remain affordable well beyond that,” developers said.
