NEWARK, NJ — One down, three more to go. That was the update from the Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District (LPCCD) after it renovated a “dilapidated, abandoned house” in Newark and turned it into an attractive two-family home.

The nonprofit recently hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of 68 Sherman Avenue in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Newark.

According to the LPCCD, the house is the first of four sites that will be renovated under its “Scattered Sites Housing Development initiative.” The goal? To create affordable homeownership opportunities that support “wealth-building, neighborhood stability and equitable growth” in New Jersey’s largest city.

The home at 68 Sherman Avenue features three-bedroom units, off-street parking, a finished recreation space and a private backyard – all elements of “quality, livable housing,” the nonprofit said.

The LPCCD said it plans to continue development across the remaining Scattered Sites locations throughout 2026 and 2027.

Mayor Ras Baraka and South Ward Councilman Patrick Council were among those on hand for last month’s ribbon cutting ceremony on Sherman Avenue.

“We need as much housing as we can,” Baraka said, adding that the state of New Jersey needs to continue closing its “wealth gap.”

“Homeownership changes outcomes – it creates stability, it builds equity,” said Susan Austin, director of real estate development for the LPCCD.

“We are not just building structures: we are creating access,” Austin added.
