NEWARK, NJ — A hit-and-run crash killed a pedestrian and critically injured another in Newark early Friday morning, authorities say.
The fatality took place around 4:30 a.m. on the 100-block of Empire Street, a spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.
One of the pedestrians was pronounced dead at the scene. The other is in critical condition, authorities said.
The vehicle fled the scene, prosecutors said.
More details, including the identities of the victims, was not immediately available.
HIT-AND-RUN ARREST
Friday’s crash is the second fatal hit-and-run that took place in Newark this week.
A hit-and-run driver killed two women around 11 p.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Park Avenue and North 7th Street. The pedestrians were hit while they were in a crosswalk, prosecutors previously said.
On Wednesday, prosecutors announced that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal crash. He has been charged with two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide, two counts of second-degree leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death, and two counts of third-degree endangering an injured victim.
