ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — One of the state's largest animal shelters has found spots for four of 14 dogs urgently in need of a home, but 10 pooches still remain desperately waiting for someone to give them a chance.

The Associated Humane Societies-Newark recently put out an urgent placement call for 14 dogs. Each has a "deadline" of Wednesday, Aug. 12, the shelter said.

Since then, there's been a bit of hope: Waffles, Peach, Magnolia and Django are all safe and have either left the shelter or are waiting for pickup, the shelter reported last week.

"That being said, there are still 10 dogs waiting for adopters or a rescue organization to step up for them," AHS-Newark added.

The remaining dogs are available for adoption at the shelter's facility at 124 Evergreen Avenue in Newark. The shelter is open daily from noon to 5 p.m. for in-person meet and greets. All members of the household, including dogs, should be present for adoption meetings.

Some of the dogs are available for adoption. Others are only available to rescue groups.

Winnie | Available for Adoption | 2.5 Years Old

Winnie is one of our longest residents, having arrived at the shelter in February as a lost dog. Despite being beautiful, affectionate, and eager for attention, she continues to be overlooked. At the shelter Winnie has shown signs of dog reactivity, so we're unsure whether another dog would be the right fit for her home. What we do know is that after months of waiting, Winnie deserves the chance to finally leave the kennel behind.

Sadie | Available for Adoption | 2 Years Old

Sadie is a sweet, social, and intelligent girl who loves people. She was featured on our last deadline plea and was welcomed into foster, but unfortunately her stay ended after a scuffle with another dog resulted in her return to the shelter. While we believe Sadie may have the potential to live with another dog in the future with time, training, and proper introductions, we feel her best opportunity for success right now is as the only pet. She is spayed and ready to meet a family of her own.

Coco | Available for Adoption | 1.5 Years Old

Coco has only been at the shelter a short time, but kennel life has already taken a toll on him. The stress of confinement has resulted in leash biting and pent-up energy, and when he isn't occupied with a toy during walks, he'll even take his frustration out on traffic cones. Despite all of that, Coco is incredibly sweet, social, and playful. He's highly motivated by treats and toys, enjoys learning, and warms up to people quickly. At just a year and a half old, Coco simply needs an outlet for his energy and a home where he can decompress.

Lady | Available for Adoption | 3 Years Old

Lady was originally surrendered to the shelter due to issues with her family's landlord. According to her previous owner, she lived with children and got along with other dogs. However, in the shelter she was involved in a bite incident with another dog.

Despite that, Lady has remained friendly and social with people throughout her stay. At just 3 years old, she deserves the opportunity to leave the shelter behind and find a home that can set her up for success while recognizing her need to be the only pet at this time.

Remy | Available for Adoption | 5 Years Old

Remy is an incredibly sweet, social dog who truly loves people. Unfortunately, she was surrendered after her family experienced financial hardship. We also know Remy may not have the easiest life before coming to the shelter, reportedly living among multiple dogs that may have been used for breeding.

Because of her history and the behaviors we've seen in the shelter—including a scuffle with another dog that resulted in a bite—we believe Remy would do best as the only dog in the home. While she isn't looking for canine companions, she previously lived with children and has so much love to give the people in her life.

Leonardo | Rescue Only | 2.5 Years Old

Leonardo was welcomed into foster after being featured on our last deadline plea, but unfortunately his behavior escalated in the home. During his stay he began displaying unpredictable behavior and lunging toward both familiar people and strangers while on walks. He was also involved in a bite incident over a bone with the foster, as well as a separate bite incident during a scuffle with another dog.

While Leonardo is still a young, sweet dog, these behaviors are beyond what both the shelter and foster are equipped to safely manage. He is now looking for a rescue experienced in behavior modification that can provide the training and guidance he needs. Leonardo is neutered and has remained dog friendly while at the shelter.

Biggie | Rescue Only | 1 Year Old

Biggie is a young, high-drive Malinois mix who is struggling tremendously with the stress of kennel life. His frustration has resulted in leash biting, including a bite incident involving a staff member. Biggie was also involved in a bite incident with another dog at the shelter. Despite this, Biggie was originally found inside a hot car along side another dog so may have dog friendly potential once decompressed from shelter life.

Despite these challenges, Biggie is still very much a puppy. He's incredibly intelligent, affectionate with people, loves to play, and is eager to learn. What he needs now is a rescue experienced with high-drive working breeds that can provide structure, training, and an environment where he can succeed.

Maserati | Rescue Only | 6 Years Old

When Maserati arrived as a lost dog, he was so severely overgrown that it was difficult to see the extent of his medical needs. After being shaved down, our veterinary team discovered he requires surgery to correct double luxating patellas, in addition to treatment for an ulcerated cornea.

Combined with the behavioral challenges he's exhibited during his stay, Maserati's medical and behavioral needs exceed what the shelter can provide long-term. We truly believe he can be successfully rehabilitated with the support of a rescue willing to invest in his recovery.

Callie | Rescue Only | 1 Year Old

Callie arrived at the shelter frightened and unsure after being found as a lost dog, but with time she began to come out of her shell. Unfortunately, during a foster placement she was involved in a bite incident with the foster and was returned to the shelter.

Despite this setback, we still believe Callie is a sweet young dog with tremendous potential. She needs a rescue that can provide structure, training, and guidance to help her successfully navigate the transition from shelter life into a permanent home. Callie is approximately 40 pounds, appears dog selective, and is not cat friendly.

Oszo | Rescue Only | 1.5 Years Old

Oszo is a small, affectionate 30-pound dog who has had an incredibly difficult time adjusting to shelter life. The stress of confinement has resulted in leash biting and a minor bite incident involving a staff member inside his kennel.

Outside of the kennel, however, Oszo is a completely different dog. He's social, eager to please, highly trainable, and enjoys working with his handler. Oszo desperately needs the opportunity to leave the shelter, decompress in a calmer environment, and continue building his confidence with the support of a rescue.
