NEWARK, NJ — Authorities are investigating a fatal car crash that took place on a busy street in Newark last weekend, the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General announced Tuesday.
The crash took place around 9 p.m. on Sunday on Bloomfield Avenue, state prosecutors said.
An adult female pedestrian was fatally injured. Her identity is not being released at this time, authorities said.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office and the attorney general's Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) have launched an investigation into the crash.
The attorney general's office noted that a 2019 law – N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2) – requires the department to conduct investigations of a person's death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer's official capacity, or while the decedent is in custody.
State prosecutors didn't elaborate on whether the crash involved a law enforcement officer or a police vehicle.
No additional information was immediately available, the attorney general's office said.
