On Friday evening, Newark made a statement, and fashion was at the center of it.

The inaugural Newark Fashion Night Out officially kicked off September 25, bringing together designers, entrepreneurs, entertainment figures, elected officials and fashion enthusiasts for an opening night that celebrated the city's creativity, culture and longstanding relationship with style.

Behind the three day celebration is founder and creative director Lynette Lashawn, whose vision extends beyond producing a fashion show. Her goal is to create opportunities for designers, strengthen Newark's creative economy and give the city's fashion community a platform that reflects its talent and potential.

For those in attendance, opening night offered a glimpse of what that vision could look like.

From dramatic evening gowns and striking silhouettes to colorful statement pieces and contemporary menswear, the evening's fashion reflected an impressive range of creative expression. Guests arrived ready to make their own fashion statements, transforming the event into a celebration of personal style long before the runway presentation began.

But the significance of the evening extended beyond the clothing.

For Lashawn, Newark Fashion Night Out represents an opportunity to build on the city's existing creative identity.

With more than two decades of experience spanning fashion production, editorial work and entrepreneurship, Lashawn has developed a career that connects design with business. Her experience includes work associated with major fashion publications and the creation of retail ventures such as Off The Hanger.

Now, she is directing that experience toward building something in her own community.

Rather than limiting the experience to a traditional runway presentation, Lashawn has developed a program that connects fashion with commerce, professional development and community engagement.

Her approach recognizes that showcasing talent is only one part of building a sustainable creative industry. Providing access to customers, professional networks and opportunities for collaboration is equally important.

Opening night reflected the broad community support behind the event.

The evening brought together representatives from Newark's civic, business and creative communities, including city council members and representatives of organizations supporting the city's continued development.

The event's listed partners included the City of Newark, the Newark Arts and Education District, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority and Invest Newark.

Their involvement highlighted the connection between fashion, entrepreneurship and Newark's wider economic and cultural development.

The celebration also attracted recognizable faces from entertainment and media, including actor Tobias Truvillion.

Among the evening's notable moments was the recognition of Newark native and longtime ESSENCE editor Mikki Taylor, who received an industry honor presented by Lashawn.

The recognition was particularly meaningful within an event dedicated to celebrating Newark's influence and the individuals who have contributed to fashion, media and culture.

Although New York City is often the focus of Fashion Month, Newark has a fashion history of its own.

The city has long been associated with textile production, jewelry, accessories and independent design. Its creative history also includes influential Black designers and fashion entrepreneurs whose work reached audiences far beyond New Jersey.

Among the figures highlighted in Newark Fashion Night Out's celebration of that history are Emily Miles, remembered for her contributions to fashion education and presentation, and designer Wesley Tann, whose career included designing for Jacqueline Kennedy.

That history provides important context for what Lashawn is building today.

Newark Fashion Night Out isn't an attempt to introduce fashion to Newark. It's an opportunity to bring greater visibility to the designers, entrepreneurs and creative communities that have helped shape the city's identity for generations.

The opening night runway reflected that spirit.

The looks ranged from understated tailoring to elaborate formalwear, featuring detailed embellishments, sculptural elements, rich fabrics and unexpected color combinations.

Each presentation offered a different perspective on style, illustrating the variety of creative talent that an event like Newark Fashion Night Out can bring together.

For emerging designers, that visibility matters. Opportunities to present their work before industry professionals, potential customers, media representatives and fellow creatives can lead to relationships that extend well beyond a single evening.

While Friday's opening ceremony introduced Newark Fashion Night Out, the celebration continues throughout the weekend.

Saturday, September 26, shifts the focus toward citywide experiences, including The Newark Edit marketplace, the Brown Girls Bar Crawl, a community Fashion Walk and designer Marco Hall's Window Series.

Sunday, September 27, concludes the celebration with additional fashion experiences, designer conversations and opportunities to engage with Lashawn and participating creatives.

Additional programming includes educational opportunities, beauty experiences and the IN THE MIX creative industry mixer, giving participants opportunities to connect outside the traditional runway environment.

The expanded programming reflects one of the event's defining ideas: fashion can bring people together while generating opportunities for businesses and creative professionals throughout the city.

For Newark's independent designers and entrepreneurs, the weekend offers more than exposure. It creates opportunities to meet potential collaborators, introduce products to new audiences and participate in a growing creative network.

Newark has never been short on creativity. What Newark Fashion Night Out offers is another platform for that creativity to be recognized, supported and shared with a wider audience.

Through Lashawn's vision, the city has a new opportunity to celebrate its fashion history while creating space for the next generation of designers and entrepreneurs.

For one evening, the runway provided the setting. The bigger story was Newark itself.
