NEWARK, NJ — A high school football player from Newark has been nominated for a prestigious 2026 "Heart of a Giant Award."

Kariem Coston of Malcolm X Shabazz High School recently earned a nomination for USA Football's annual award, which is presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery and the New York Giants.

The award spotlights high school athletes in the Tri-State Area who demonstrate a "relentless work ethic and unmatched love for the game." Players are nominated by their coaches for their commitment, teamwork, willpower, character and dedication – on and off the field.

Coston was nominated as part of the Week 4 players. Voting will be open until Oct. 18. Fans can vote online here.

Here's what earned this ambitious local athlete a nomination, organizers said:

"Kariem Coston embodies the Heart of a Giant through his courage, character, and commitment to his community. A three-time sectional champion, Kariem leads by example, doing the right thing even when no one is watching and encouraging his teammates to do the same. His commitment to his community extends beyond the football field. He believes in using football to bring people together and makes an effort to show respect and kindness through everyday actions. Kariem has also faced significant adversity. After losing his father, football became a source of focus and stability. He continued to push forward, using the game as a safe haven while remaining dedicated to his teammates and family. In the classroom, he has earned Honor Roll recognition and successfully passed the NJGPA. Through perseverance, leadership, and his commitment to others, Kariem demonstrates what it truly means to have the Heart of a Giant."

"I've faced the weight room challenges with trying to grow my body," Coston wrote as part of his submission to the contest. "I've also lost my dad and football kept me focus throughout the whole thing."
