Another Inmate Sentenced For Brutal Jail Beating In Essex County
A prison inmate was almost beaten to death with a microwave, a water cooler and an industrial mop bucket, prosecutors said.
NEWARK, NJ — A prison inmate has been sentenced to extra years behind bars in connection with a brutal beating that took place at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.
On Wednesday, a Superior Court judge sentenced Darryl Watson to 20 years in state prison for his role in the attack on a fellow inmate, Jayshawn Boyd.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Watson and six other inmates beat Boyd in the county-run jail with a microwave, a water cooler and an industrial mop bucket in September 2019, which left him with permanent brain damage.

On June 14, a jury found Watson guilty of multiple crimes against Boyd, including first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault and third-degree possession of a microwave for an unlawful purpose.
The sentence for attempted murder will run consecutive to the sentence Watson is presently serving for murder. As result of the consecutive sentence, Watson’s aggregate sentence in state prison will be 90 years.
