Barbershop, Hair Salon Robbed In Newark; Police Search For Suspects

NPD: Two men robbed a barbershop at gunpoint. A man snatched a purse at a hair salon and hit the victim several times in her face.

NEWARK, NJ — A barbershop and a hair salon in Newark were robbed last week during separate incidents, authorities say.

The first robbery took place at a local hair salon on March 15, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.

“At approximately 5:15 a.m., the suspect entered a hair salon on the 200-block of 16th Avenue and inquired about hair-braiding services before grabbing a worker's purse from her workstation and fleeing towards the exit. The victim followed him and attempted to snatch back her purse. The suspect then struck her several times in her face with a closed fist before fleeing on foot. The victim’s purse contained $1,000, her identification and other personal property.”

The suspect was described as 6 feet and male. He was wearing a black beanie cap, green puffer coat, blue jeans and tan boots, police said (see photo below).

Another robbery took place on March 17, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.

Here’s what happened, police said:

“At approximately 5:16 p.m., [two] suspects entered a barbershop on the 900-block of Frelinghuysen Avenue. One of them brandished a weapon, causing patrons to run to the rear of the business, except for the victim who was still in the barber chair. The suspect struck the victim with the weapon and snatched his Crossbody bag containing $700. He fled with the other suspect and both men were captured on surveillance video heading south on Frelinghuysen Avenue.”

The man with the weapon was wearing a green camouflage jacket. The second suspect was wearing a black jacket, black pants and black shoes, authorities said.

Police released surveillance photos of each man (see below).
