Bashir Muhammad Akinyele Set to Speak at Seton Hall University

Akinyele will discuss ways to make African/African American culture relevant to today's classroom and to community activism.

Newark, NJ – Bashir Muhammad Akinyele, who is a respected educator and community activist in Newark, NJ, will participate in an important education conference at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. The conference is being organized by the New York African Studies Association (NYASA). The event is on Saturday April 14, 2018 from 8:30 am - 4:00 pm. Registration will be on the 4th floor at the atrium in Jubilee Hall. Bashir Muhammad Akinyele will be speaking at a workshop from 9:30am to 12:15pm in Stafford Hall titled-African Centered Concepts, Content and Strategies for Teachers and Community Organizing. Currently, Bashir Muhammad Akinyele teaches history at the historic Weequahic High School in Newark, NJ. He is also the Chairperson of the school’s Black History Month Committee.

The New York African Studies Association was founded in 1967 as the SUNY African Studies Faculty Association. The organization is a non-profit membership association. It was incorporated as NYASA in 1975. NYASA is dedicated to advancing the discipline of Africana Studies. As a regional organization, NYASA promotes the visibility and advancement of the discipline in New York State and surrounding areas, and offers opportunities for the scholarly and professional development of educators, and enhanced education for community members, leaders and activists.

Bashir Muhammad Akinyele says, “This conference is an opportunity to discuss solutions to the problems affecting African American students locked inside classrooms still entrenched with white supremacy and racism.”
