
It was definitely an adventurous season opener at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium for the Newark Bears.
The Bears took a 3-0 first-inning lead against Rockland Thursday, extended it to 4-1 in the second, fell behind 5-4 in the fifth andtied the game at 5-5 in the seventh before their Can-Am League rivals scored six runs in the 10th to win 11-5.
Danny Santiesteban had a big day for Newark. He had three hits and two RBI and Brian Nichols had three hits, two doubles and an RBI. The Bears tied the score in the bottom of the seventh, when Tim Raines Jr. walked, stole second and came home on Santiesteban’s second RBI single of the game.

The go-ahead run in the 10th was scored by Tommy Giles, who opened the inning with his fourth single of the game and scored on a wild pitch. Ryan Mollica added a run-scoring single in the inning and Norm Hutchins and former Bear Todd Jennings added RBI.
The Bears and Boulders resume their four-game series Friday morning at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium with an 11 a.m. start. Jacob Wild will take the start for the Bears.
