A Different Type of Caliber

Illegal guns that are confiscated off the streets are given new life. These illegal guns were transformed into fashionable pieces of jewelry designed by Jessica Mindrich.

Similar to other major cities across the country, Newark, New Jersey suffers from a high crime rate mostly due to the usage of illegal guns by criminals.

Jessica Mindich (Mrs. Mindich) is an attorney and mother of two.  In addition, Mrs. Mindich is the founder of Jewelry for a Cause, which is a business that designs jewelry as a fundraising tool for nonprofit organizations.   After listening to the Mayor of Newark, New Jersey - Corey A. Booker (Mayor Booker) speak
at a conference over one year ago about illegal gun violence within the City of
Newark, the Caliber Collection was born. Instead of blaming others, Mrs. Mindich decided to be a problem solver.   She arranged meetings with Mayor Booker in
Newark and began designing pieces for the collection.   With the assistance of Director Samuel A. DeMaio of the Newark Police Department, the initial pieces from the Caliber Collection were made from 250 illegal guns that were seized from crime scenes and later released from evidence.  Future pieces of the collection will be made from guns that were sold to the Newark Police Department through gun buyback programs.

The Caliber Collection was named by Mrs. Mindich’s twelve year old son, who stated that the removal of illegal caliber guns off of the streets raises the caliber of the City of Newark.

Jewerly for a Cause donates 20% of its proceeds from the Caliber Collection to the Newark Police Department.  As a result, $40,000 was donated to sponsor future gun buyback amnesty programs.    Ms. Mindich also founded the Caliber
Foundation, where 100% of the proceeds from the sale of Caliber T-Shirts are
used to support the victims and/or families of illegal gun violence.
