UPDATE: 2 Dead After Police Shooting In Newark, NJ
No officers were injured and one suspect is in custody, police say.

NEWARK, NJ — Authorities are investigating a police shooting that left two people dead in Newark on Friday and one suspect in custody, according to prosecutors.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office confirmed that Newark police officers were involved in a shooting in which two people died. A preliminary investigation indicates the incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. in the 500 block of North 7th Street, prosecutors said.
None of the officers suffered an injury and one suspect is in custody, prosecutors stated.

During a Friday afternoon press conference, Mayor Ras Baraka said that police arrested a 17-year-old Newark resident after he allegedly got out of a vehicle and ran from police.
The officers were responding to a phone report of “criminal activity” in the area, and the two men and teen allegedly matched the caller’s description, Baraka said.

Police later found a gun on the teen, Baraka said, but it’s unknown if any of the suspects fired at officers.
"Those guys were not interested in surrendering," Stewart told NJ.com. "Our officers responded to that threat and Newark is a safer place today because of them."
Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose issued a statement Friday that Newark police officers were involved in a recent “police shooting.”
All inquiries related to the matter are being handled by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office who is investigating this incident, Ambrose said. No additional information about the shooting was made available in the Newark police statement.
Authorities stated that the investigation is being handled by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
"Pursuant to the Attorney General guidelines, the Newark Police Department is recused from participating in the ongoing investigation," prosecutors said.
