Bull Wanders Onto Tracks In Newark, Delays NJ Transit Trains (UPDATE)

The bovine intruder caused headaches for commuters traveling between New Jersey and New York City.

NEWARK, NJ — A bull on the loose threw a monkey wrench into the daily commute at Newark Penn Station on Thursday, authorities said.

NJ Transit shared a photo of the bovine intruder standing on a segment of the tracks, citing the animal as the source of a train delay between Newark Penn and Penn Station New York.

Video footage filmed at the scene shows the animal trotting along the tracks as shocked passengers watch from the above platform.

Trains were subject to delays up to 45-minutes. NJ Transit rail tickets and passes are being cross-honored by PATH and Hoboken, Newark Penn and 33rd Street New York, authorities said.

NJ Transit officials gave an update on the situation at 12:04 p.m.:

"The bull is no longer on the tracks and service has resumed with 45-minute delays between Newark Penn Station and New York Penn Station. NJ Transit rail tickets and passes are being cross-honored by PATH at Hoboken, Newark Penn and 33rd Street New York."

The Newark Police Department is now leading the investigation, officials noted.

A police spokesperson provided the following statement to Patch about the situation:

"At approximately 10:46 a.m. today, police responded to Frelinghuysen Avenue near Victoria Street on a call that a bull was observed loose behind a building. Members of the Newark Police Emergency Services Unit assisted Port Authority police in locating the animal and contained it inside a fenced lot without incident. The animal will be retrieved and safeguarded by a local animal sanctuary. No injuries have been reported. No further information is available."
