Car Didn’t Stop After Striking, Killing Newark Woman: Police

The driver that killed Josette Morales allegedly kept going after hitting her, Essex County prosecutors say.

NEWARK, NJ — Authorities are investigating a fatal pedestrian-car strike that claimed the life of a 47-year-old Essex County woman on Sunday evening.

A vehicle struck and killed Irvington resident Josette Morales as she was crossing the area of 697 Springfield Avenue in Newark around 6:30 p.m., according to a joint statement from Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose.

Police found Morales unresponsive in the street after arriving on the scene. She was pronounced dead on scene at 6:51 p.m., authorities said.

The vehicle did not stop after striking Morales, prosecutors alleged.

The fatality is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. Anyone with information can contact Task Force detectives at (877) 847-7432 or (973) 621-4586.
