Car Fatally Strikes Elderly Pedestrian On New Year’s Eve In Newark

A car struck an 80-year-old pedestrian a few hours before the new year in Newark, prosecutors said.

NEWARK, NJ — A car fatally struck an 80-year-old pedestrian on New Year's Eve in Newark, prosecutors said.

Newark police responded to a vehicle-pedestrian collision at the intersection of Clinton Avenue and Irvine Turner Boulevard at 8:39 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The pedestrian – later identified as Eugene Thacker, 80, of Newark – was transported to University Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 9:42 p.m.

The driver of the vehicle – who wasn’t injured – remained at the scene after the collision. No additional information was immediately available.
