Child Killed In New Jersey Fire, 2 Others Hospitalized: Authorities

An investigation continues after a fire killed a child and injured two others at an apartment building in Newark.

NEWARK, NJ — An investigation continues into a fire that killed a child and injured two others at an apartment building in Newark on Wednesday morning, authorities say.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the fatal fire took place on Astor Street during the early morning hours.

A 9-year-old girl – one of eight children who reportedly lived at the location – was transported to University Hospital and pronounced dead around 2 a.m. Two other children were injured and hospitalized, authorities said.

The cause and origin of the blaze is under investigation, authorities said.
