Children's carousel opens in Newark's Military Park

Newest addition and attraction for downtown Newark

Just in time for the three day Labor Day weekend, a children’s carousel, the newest attraction and improvement in downtown Newark, is now open in Military Park.

The carousel is open to families 11 am – 7 pm Monday - Saturday, and noon - 5 on Sunday and the cost to ride is $2.

The carousel features 16 horses, and was designed to reflect the history of the city—each horse pays tribute to an important horse in Newark history. The entire cost of the $450,000 project was paid by an anonymous donor.

“The carousel is not only a new attraction that will welcome families to Military Park and downtown Newark, but it will also educate them about the city’s history,” said Ben Donsky of Biederman Redevelopment Ventures, who also serves as Vice President of the Military Park Partnership, which redeveloped and now operates the park.

The Military Park carousel was built by Carousels and Carvings in Marion, OH. Thornton Tomasetti of Newark, which offers engineering services to clients worldwide, provided pro-bono consulting services.

The carousel will have a formal, ribbon-cutting opening and ceremony on Thursday September 15th.

The debut of the carousel is the newest addition to Military park, which features daily programming and events attracting Newark residents and people who work near the park to enjoy the magnificent green space.

The park also features BURG: Burgers & Taps, a casual restaurant owned by celebrated chef/restaurateur Chris Siversen and his business partner, Marc Haskell.

Military Park, which dates to 1667, was redeveloped and restored in 2014 by Biederman Redevelopment Ventures. In addition to the daily programming/events, Military Park new provides clean restrooms, and free Wi-Fi.
